About the charity
Trees for Cities is the only UK charity working at a national and international scale to improve lives by planting trees in cities, by working alongside local communities to cultivate lasting change in their neighbourhoods.
What our grant will help to fund
Together with the school, this funding will allow us to adapt Cayley Primary’s playground to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis. We will install green features such as new trees, food-growing areas, outdoor classrooms, natural play features and wildlife habitats to tackle air pollution, encourage biodiversity and inspire teachers to teach outside through nature.
On-the-ground support for teachers is included to use and maintain outside space for pupils’ learning and play, so that the playground becomes a valued sustainable resource for the school. The school is located in Tower Hamlets. It is the highest ranked London borough for child poverty, second for lowest access to greenspace, fifth for worst air quality and has low tree canopy cover.
This playground will benefit the school’s 550 children through improved outdoor educational provision, daily access to nature, which is lined to improved physical and mental health, and by mitigating the effects of poor air quality and lack of biodiversity.
