About the charity

MARINElife is a science charity that conducts monthly Ocean Health Checks by gathering information of key marine species so we can provide relevant, robust and up-to-date information to those working for the sustainable future of our oceans.

What our grant will help to fund

We are delighted to have received this award at a highly very opportune time, as our work programme recovers from the pandemic following the enforced hiatus. The continued role of volunteers is crucial to our work in delivering good quality scientific data on the marine environment as cost effectively as possible. The funding will play a vital role in recruiting and upskilling volunteers, needed for the resumption of our established ferry surveys and in improving the type and quality of our seabird recording.

The funding will also be vital to upgrade our website and better connect new volunteers, with exciting new training opportunities. Finally, we have developed a large backlog of photo-identification and other data from citizen science initiatives, which we can now begin to address to a greater degree through the new funding.

“Core to our work is encouraging and engaging people in the conservation of whales, dolphins and seabirds in the marine environment, whilst providing policy makers with evidence to make informed decisions. We are a charity run on surprisingly few resources and this grant will make a huge difference in helping us to keep punching above our weight, recruiting and training the next generation of volunteers and making our data available for science and conservation efforts on these wonderful animals.”
