About the Charity
The Caledonian Environmental Restoration Trust are committed to the restoring the natural beauty of Scotland for the benefit of nature and its people. Our Scottish Coastal Clean Up initiative is helping to clear the beautiful Scottish coastline of plastic pollution, working together with local groups and beach cleaning organisations.
What our donation will help fund
After running several beach clean events on mainland Scotland, in April 2022 the Scottish Coastal Clean Up initiative gathered more than 75m3 of marine detritus on the Isle of Ulva over one weekend. We were only able to remove the marine plastic from the island with the help of local businesses Mull Charters and Turus Mara, and Bakkafrost, which sent its boats with a crew to help.
Our time on Ulva highlighted one of the main issues faced by island beach cleaning communities – what to do with the litter once it has been gathered. After this experience we decided to change our focus slightly and now have access to a larger 14m boat that can hold a lot of the collected marine litter to remove it from the islands.
We are now looking to raise money to put towards a smaller landing craft that can manoeuvre between the big boat and shore to take volunteers to clean areas hard to access by land, and remove the rubbish collected back out to the bigger boat.
