Child Bereavement UK helps families rebuild their lives when a child grieves or when a child dies.
What our grant will help to fund
One in 29 school children in the UK has lost a parent or sibling, with a parent dying every 22 minutes. This results in over 200,000 people annually facing mental health and wellbeing challenges due to bereavement.
Families, children, and professionals often struggle to cope without proper support. Bereaved young people are at higher risk for anxiety, underachievement in school, criminal behaviour, and long-term unemployment. In fact, 30% of adults who lose a child may experience mental health issues for up to 12 years.
This funding will support a 3-day-a-week Helpline Bereavement Support Practitioner for one year, helping over 930 contacts (60% families, 40% professionals) via email, phone, and LiveChat. The helpline informs the prioritization of other services, allowing bereavement teams to focus on families needing deeper support. This initiative also helps educate and train professionals, reducing long-term impacts on vulnerable communities. Additionally, we have expanded our reach by taking over calls from Sibling Support, aiding children grieving the loss of a sibling. Immediate support will begin with funding in November, ensuring ongoing assistance to families in need.
