About the Charity

Derwen College is a specialist college based in Shropshire. We offer students with special educational needs and disabilities the opportunity to learn vocational and independence skills.

What our grant will help to fund

Our Nurture programme is based at Derwen College in Shropshire, which is a specialist college for young adults with special education needs and disabilities (SEND). The Nurture programme, for which we have been awarded the grant, has been developed for students with complex or profound and multiple learning disabilities (CLD or PMLD).

The programme is highly personalised for each student, with education and training based around communication, social interaction, independence and wellbeing, with the aim of maximising skills for adult life, including moving into supported living, and increased community participation/ social mobility.

The college is currently only able to facilitate eight students on the Nurture programme and demand is high. The grant will assist with the expansion of our current facility, enabling additional student places within a bespoke teaching area. The new space will be adaptable to meet the range of learning, medical and behavioural needs of this student group. It will include four new classrooms and teaching apartments and even the corridor will be designed for use in physiotherapy sessions.

“We are so thrilled for the expansion of Nurture to be going ahead, knowing we will be able to broaden the range of students we can support in a personal and individual way. The expansion to Nurture offers us a dynamic teaching space where students can develop their communication, social and independence skills.”
