About the Charity
SMiRA is a charity giving advice and support to thousands of children and adults with Selective Mutism, to their families and the professionals who work with them.
What our donation will help fund
Selective Mutism (SM) is a serious anxiety disorder which prevents the person from being able to speak in certain situations where speech is expected, such as school, work or often anywhere outside the home or immediate family.
It usually starts in early childhood and can last the whole of a person’s life if not treated, sometimes resulting in the development of other mental health problems such as social anxiety and depression. This can have a devastating effect on lives, with people with SM potentially becoming unable to attend school, obtain an education, work or have social relationships.
We stand alongside other very much larger charities to help influence health and government policy. We work hard to not only give direct advice and support to individuals who contact us, but also to raise awareness of SM. We undertake research projects and often give advice to other researchers in the field of SM.
SMiRA has run successfully on a very small annual turnover since 1992, with a team consisting mainly of volunteers. During this time we have become known as the foremost SM charity in the UK, and have wide international links with other SM groups. Winning £1000 in the Movement for Good Awards draw will help us to continue this vital work.
“SMiRA is a relatively small charity that provides much needed information and support for those with selective mutism, their families, caregivers and professionals involved in their therapy. As we continually operate on a shoe-string budget we are delighted to win this award from the Benefact Group’s Movement for Good, which will allow us to continue our work further, particularly into research of this much-misunderstood condition.”
