About the Charity

English Heritage is a registered charity created to share and protect the National Heritage Collection for the long-term benefit of the public, welcoming over 10 million visitors to the over 420 historic sites in our care, each year.

What our grant will help to fund

Our Climate Heritage Impact Programme builds upon the work of a successful, Benefact Group/Movement for Good supported, pilot project which evaluated the impact of climate change upon the historic sites in English Heritage’s care and explored holistic approaches to climate risk management. This additional funding will enable us to focus upon practical adaptation, creating guidance for decision-makers and ultimately the dissemination of our learnings across the wider sector.

Climate related Risk Assessment templates, case studies and guides to increase climate resilience will be developed in the form of an accessible ‘toolkit’ for owners and managers of heritage. This will be supported by interactive 3D models to illustrate the effects of climate change on genuine examples, and how appropriate and effective adaptations can mitigate the long-term impact. The charity will utilise its reputation and experience to provide sector-leading guidance; disseminating our findings to protect the sites in our care, whilst cascading learnings across professional networks and engaging informal audiences upon the topic of climate resilience.

“The grant will support our work to understand the impact of climate change and how we adapt to make the historic environment climate resilient. ”
