About the Charity
Transaid transforms lives through safe, available, and sustainable transport, working with communities, partners, and governments to solve transport challenges throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
What our grant will help to fund
Ghana is a critical trade hub and home to one of the busiest shipping terminals in West Africa. The demand for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers is increasing, as an estimated 98% of all cargo transiting the country is transported by road, but tragically 7,000 people are killed in road traffic collisions every year in Ghana (WHO 2018).
This Movement for Good Award from Benefact Group will enable Transaid to help save lives by ensuring Ghana’s professional road transport sector continues to grow in a safe and sustainable way. Working in partnership with local training institutions, Transaid will upskill local driver trainers in accordance with a newly developed HGV driver training standard, specifically designed by Transaid for Ghana. Using the ‘train the trainer’ model, this project will improve the safety of hundreds of HGV drivers, along with the thousands of other road users and roadside communities they interact with each year.
“Transaid transforms lives through safe, available, and sustainable transport. We work with partners and governments to reduce death and injury on the roads through our professional driver training programmes. This Movement for Good grant will make a significant contribution to our road safety work in Ghana – we are very grateful to the Benefact Group for their support.”
