About the Charity

Historic Royal Palaces’ care for six of the world’s most magnificent palaces, welcoming visitors from around the world to discover history in some of the country’s most iconic sites.

What our grant will help to fund

Historic Royal Palaces’ award-winning schools programme is renowned for its use of costumed presenters who transport pupils into the past. We provide access to objects and imagery that they could never encounter so powerfully in the classroom. Our workshops cover the wide curriculum, including history, science, literacy, art, and drama – so pupils can discover their own passions and pursue wider goals.

We heavily subsidise this programme through our Access Fund for schools in disadvantaged areas, but there are still thousands who cannot afford to visit. We understand that travel costs to London are a major barrier for many schools, as neither they nor families can afford to pay these costs. This is why we are trialling a pilot programme to offer travel bursaries, ranging from £300-£1,500, to ensure pupils from all over the UK can benefit from our enriching educational programme.

Many previous Access Fund visitors had never been to London before and were missing out on nationally important sites. With thanks to Movement for Good, you will help us double the number of free places available this year to 16,000, welcoming thousands more pupils to learn from our palaces.

“We are delighted to receive this generous Movement for Good Award funding, which will enable our education programme to continue to reach schools from across the country. As an independent charity, Historic Royal Palaces is committed to removing barriers to access our heritage sites, to ensure our enriching programme is open to all. This support for travel bursaries for schools who may not normally be able to visit us will enable thousands of students to benefit from our award-winning educational programme in the coming year.”
